Understanding Layered Double Hydroxide properties as sorbent materials for removing organic pollutants from environmental waters

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are a group of anthropogenic organic pollutants known to have host adverse environmental and health implications. The removal such from aqueous environments ensure water is quality fit for reuse therefore highly important gaining considerable interest. Whilst there multiple approaches used EC remediation matrices, sorption using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has been reported as suitable technique. LDHs interesting clay-like materials with numerous properties which lend being sorbent materials. Such include low toxicity, anion exchange capacity tuneable structures through possible variations in metals, anions preparation techniques. To design successful material, it fully understand the structure-property-function relationship. However, application pollutants, this relationship not well understood. Hence ability bespoke high-performing LDH material currently limited. This review considers impact structure related physiochemical on their matrices. Methyl Orange (MO) first considered model pollutant, importance characteristics metal layers, interlayer resulting textual observed. A comparison then made between findings MO case study other LDHs, particular focus pharmaceuticals. Finally, role conditions considerations linked commercial applications discussed, recommendations future work. • impacting broadly similar pollutants.
